Areas of work
Martin has three distinct areas of practice, comprising
domestic, corporate and commercial work; inward investment
from North America; and a niche motor collector practice.
The domestic corporate work is a mixture of new promotions,
shareholders’ agreements, raising of capital,
advice to individual shareholders and directors, reorganisations,
and the sale and purchase of businesses. The commercial
practice covers a wide range of contractual work across
different industries, including banking and information
technology. Martin is rigorous in his efforts to keep
documents short and to the point.
The North American practice derives partly from time
spent working in various law firms in the USA and Canada,
where Martin maintains a large number of clients and
contacts. His expertise ranges from the standard diet
of subsidiary and branch formations, agency and distribution
arrangements, to acquisitions and joint ventures by
North American entities and their often complicated
shareholder arrangements.
The motor practice arises from Martin's lifetime enthusiasm
for old sports and racing cars. The clients are a mixture
of dealers, brokers, restorers, race preparers and major
collectors from all parts of the world, In this specialised
but growing area of commercial activity. Martin has
handled a large number of cross border sales and exchanges
of very expensive vehicles, and is experienced in the
import, taxation and registration issues. He also handles
resolution of the disputes that inevitably arise in
this area, with the help of the firm’s litigation
department where matters become seriously contentious.

Martin was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge (1965
– 1968) and College of Law, London (1970 –
