Areas of work
Patrick specialises in media (broadcasting, newspapers
and book publishing), legislation and industry regulation,
defamation, contempt, confidence and privacy, intellectual
property, media contracts e.g. rights acquisitions and
exploitation, sponsorship and production agreements.
Patrick conducts work on behalf of many media organisations
including British Board of Film Classification; ITV
Network Ltd; Harper Collins Inc, Scottish Media Group,
ITV plc, Informa, Celador, RDF and the Scottish Daily
Record and Sunday Mail. Patrick regularly lectures and
provides seminars for clients and appears on discussion
panels particularly relating to clearing of investigative
documentary programmes.
Chambers and Partners 2006 listed Patrick in their
Defamation/Reputation Management section as “A
dedicated and hard-working lawyer, [who] has a keen
eye for detail. Clients trust him to advise on pre-broadcast
and pre-publication clearance, as well as issues of
copyright, privacy and contempt”. He is also “regarded
as ‘extremely knowledgeable on regulatory matters”.
Education
Patrick was educated at Exeter University (1971-1974).
Patrick joined Goodman Derrick as a trainee in 1974
and qualified as a Solicitor in 1976. Patrick has been
a partner at Goodman Derrick since 1979.
