Rank Nemo (DMS) Limited & Others v Coutinho –Court of Appeal Judgement

Goodman Derrick LLP acts for Rank Nemo (DMS) Limited and other associated parties in the case of Rank Nemo (DMS) Limited & Others v Coutinho (A2/2008/2385) in their appeal on a point of law before the Court of Appeal heard on 20 March 2009.

Judgement was handed down today.

“The appeal concerned the jurisdiction of the Employment Tribunal to deal with certain applications after judgment.

Whilst the appeal was unsuccessful, the Court of Appeal stated that it is for the Employment Tribunal to now investigate the facts of the case, apply the law and to adjudicate on the claim.

Our clients are currently considering the judgment”.

Alison Downie joins Goodman Derrick LLP

Acknowledged employment specialist Alison Downie has joined the firm from Bindmans, where she was previously Head of Employment.

Alison specialises in the full range of employment law, advising and representing employers and employees on all types of employment and procedural issues. Employment Law Workshops

The Employment Department have recently completed a series of client workshops covering redundancy, the new disciplinary and grievance procedures and bullying and harassment.

The Employment Department offered employers the chance have their current employment arrangements reviewed, with a view to making recommendations as to what should be put into place in order to comply with legal requirements and also good practice. Workline

A confidential employment advice helpline is available for workers in the UK film and television industries. The Workline service is run by staff with HR experience gained within those industries, and coordinated by our employment team here at Goodman Derrick LLP. Advice covers the full gamut of work-related queries, including contract issues, maternity and paternity leave and pay, flexible working hours, disciplinary and dismissal procedures, and pensions. Events

On 29 January 2008, the Employment Department welcomed clients and guests to their newly refurbished offices for an evening of indulgence and extravagance – a ‘Champagne and Chocolate tasting’ evening. Guests sampled some of the finest origin chocolate available in the UK made by leading chocolatiers such as Amedei and Valrhona. Martin Christy, founder of the Academy of Chocolate in the UK and World Chocolate Award Jury Member, introduced the different chocolates and described the different aromas, tastes and textures whilst demonstrating how best way to taste Champagne and chocolate together. Martin further explained how champagne and chocolate can best compliment each other. Clients and guests were also invited to enter a competition with the chance to win a bottle of fine champagne and a goodie bag of exclusive chocolates.

In previous years, the Employment Department hosted a “Well Being Evening” at the AVEDA salon on High Holborn. Clients and guests enjoyed an evening of indulgence where they sampled treatments such as stress relieving back massages, mini manicures and eyebrow shaping. Hair- styling and make up consultations were also available as well as access to an image consultant and Pilates specialist. Guests were also treated to drinks and canapés plus a goody bag containing AVEDA vouchers and products.
