John has long been named as a leading construction lawyer in Chambers Directory, which has noted his "experience and considerable gravitas in major dispute resolution" and his "innate sense of good judgment"; the 2010 edition describes him as "calm, cool, clear and concise" and the 2011 edition described him as "tactically aware and experienced". The Legal 500 refers to John as "an exceptional lawyer – very impressive." He is listed as one of the world's leading construction lawyers in the 2011 edition of the International Who's Who of Business Lawyers.
John is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and of the Dispute Board Federation and sits as an arbitrator, adjudicator, mediator and Dispute Board Member, as well as advising construction clients on the whole range of domestic and international disputes for employers, contractors and professionals.
John also sits as an arbitrator and acts as counsel in international commercial arbitrations in such fields as commodities, banking, technology and energy.
In December 2009 he was appointed as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, being elected Chair of the Board in 2011. In 2012 he took office as Co-Chair of the International Construction Projects section of the International Bar Association.
