Nigel successfully combines a broad commercial litigation and dispute resolution practice with his media litigation work. In the commercial sphere Nigel acts for individuals and businesses and deals with contract and shareholder disputes, agency disputes, professional negligence and insolvency matters.
In his media practice Nigel primarily handles defamation claims, royalty disputes as well as reputation management and IP issues.
Nigel also has significant experience in dealing with disputes involving classic cars (often involving questions of title and provenance). Nigel has acted in disputes concerning various makes of car such as DB Aston Martins, a Bugatti Type 35, a Jaguar D-Type and not least a pre-war Mercedes-Benz single seat racing car.
Disputes can often be very time consuming and costly. Nigel sees his role as guiding clients through the dispute resolution process to their objectives as quickly and efficiently as possible and seeks to achieve this by fostering a close working relationship with his clients and by giving practical advice from the off.
Nigel’s past high profile cases include:
Waterson v Lloyd – acting for the successful appellants in this important decision by the Court of Appeal on honest opinion
Quinton v Peirce – a novel case in the High Court acting for successful Defendants to a claim not brought in defamation, but for injurious falsehood and breach of the Data Protection Act 1998
Seven v Gossage – successful defence of a claim for the infringement of a format for a television programme
Miles v ITV Networks – reported case in which summary judgment was obtained by the client against the Claimant who had alleged infringement of a format for a children’s television programme
Singer v Beckett (also known as Re Continental Assurance) – leading High Court decision on director duties in which the dismissal of the case against the client was achieved
