Goodman Derrick Partner John Wright presents a paper on Dispute Boards at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Penang Conference
Goodman Derrick Partner, John Wright attended a conference in Penang, Malaysia in August 2013 run by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) on the subject of “Arbitration: Tapping Asia’s Growth”.
The conference, which attracted over three hundred delegates, was opened by a keynote speech from the Chief Justice of Singapore, The Right Honourable Mr Sundaresh Menon. Over two days papers were delivered by a number of eminent speakers, including a session entitled “Inside Judges’ Minds” moderated by a former Judge of the Court of Appeal of Malaysia and featuring presentations from four sitting Judges from various jurisdictions.
John gave a paper on Dispute Boards on which he shared the platform with Pierre Genton, a very experienced Dispute Board Member who is currently sitting on Dispute Board Panels on projects such as the Panama Canal. In making his presentation John drew on his current and recent experience sitting on a number of Dispute Boards in Africa and Central Europe. The presentations by John and Pierre brought about a lively discussion with a number of questions from the audience.
The conference closed with a black tie dinner during the course of which John, in his capacity as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the CIArb, thanked the organisers and all the attendees for what was undoubtedly a highly successful and superbly organised conference.
John has long been named as a leading construction lawyer in Chambers Directory, which has noted his "experience and considerable gravitas in major dispute resolution" and his "innate sense of good judgement".
John is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and of the Dispute Board Federation and sits as an arbitrator, adjudicator, mediator and Dispute Board Member, as well as advising construction clients on the whole range of domestic and international disputes for employers, contractors and professionals.
John also sits as an arbitrator and acts as counsel in international commercial arbitrations in such fields as commodities, banking, technology and energy.
In December 2009 he was appointed as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, being elected Chair of the Board in 2011. In 2012 he took office as Co-Chair of the International Construction Projects section of the International Bar Association.
