How can Spice Girls, Coldplay and Rolling Stones lyrics help in mediation?
- AuthorJonathan Haydn-Williams
Spice Girls: The mediator may ask the parties - or they may ask themselves - what they want. The next question should be "what do you really REALLY want" (followed by asking why they really really want it).
Coldplay: Next the mediator can remind the parties - or they can remind themselves - that “When you get what you want, but not what you need ... could it be worse?". The focus can then be on what each party needs in order to settle the dispute.
Rolling Stones: And as a colleague has reminded me, the same point can be made by the lyrics:
"You can't always get what you want, But if you try sometimes you might find, You get what you need”.
