From me to you: Alexandra Bonner celebrates International Women's Day 2021

Alexandra Bonner joined the firm in April 2016 as head of the Employment Team. Alex covers a broad spectrum dealing with all aspects of employment law both contentious and non-contentious.

What inspired you to become a lawyer? And where did you find personal drive to commit to the study and a life of learning and advising?

It was a profession that interested me from a relatively young age, and with a number of lawyers in my family it was hard to escape. I enjoy working with people and solving problems and employment law allows me to do this almost on a daily basis. I also don’t like to lose.

Let’s be honest, the profession can be tough and the recent pandemic has made some things even tougher, have you found resilience hard to come by? You have probably surprised yourself too...

The last year has forced us all to look for creative ways of dealing with matters but has also allowed us to become closer to our clients and contacts. It has also demonstrated that it is possible to work flexibly and still be effective.

If you were to advise the young woman that walked through the door for your first work experience job, what would you say?

Grab the opportunity with both hands and keep an open mind. I actually qualified as a property litigator but have been an employment lawyer since I was 4 years PQE (and haven’t looked back since), so you just never know what is around the corner.

And finally do you have any advice for the young lawyers starting out today, have things truly changed?

When I first became a lawyer it was much harder to balance having a family with a career, one often had to choose between working more flexibly and becoming a partner. I am pleased to say that that is no longer the case and there are a number of women partners and indeed lawyers that are able to work flexibly without compromising their careers. If you make mistakes, learn from them and never be afraid to ask questions, that is how we become better at what we do.
